Water technology major VA Tech Wabag has bagged a slew of orders in the current quarter including a 300 million litre per day (MLD) mega seawater desalination plant in Saudi Arabia.

The Chennai-based company said it has recently bagged a repeat order worth approximately 5.12 million Bahraini Dinars (around Rs 118 crore) from the Ministry of Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning (MoW) in Bahrain.

The order includes the operation and maintenance (O&M) of the 40 million litre per day (MLD) Madinat Salman sewage treatment plant (STP) and the long sea outfall for a period of five years.

Wabag was previously awarded the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract for the same 40 MLD STP and Long Sea Outfall in October 2015 by Bahrain’s Ministry of Housing. The project was successfully completed in 2018, after which Wabag has been operating and maintaining the plant since November 1, 2018.

The STP is equipped with tertiary treatment and sludge treatment using aerobic digestion and thermal drying. An automatic bagging plant is provided to pack the EPA Class A Sludge from dryers for commercial sales. The treated water is reused and caters to the entire irrigation water requirements of 13 islands, said an official statement.

“We are proud to secure this prestigious repeat O&M order from the Ministry of Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning in Bahrain. This order further strengthens our O&M order book, providing annuity income, improved cash flows, and revenue predictability”, said Wabag’s GM – MENA RHQ Srinivasan K.

In late July, the company said it had secured a design, build, operate (DBO) order funded by World Bank worth about Rs 380 crore from the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) for design, engineering, construction and commissioning (EPC) of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) with tertiary treatment facility, biogas generation, solar sludge drying beds and intermediate pumping stations along with associated piping works, scheduled to be completed over 30 months, followed by 10 years of operation and maintenance (O&M).

These advanced WWTPs, located at four sites in Bommanahalli under the Karnataka Water Security and Disaster Resilience Programme, are vital for the region’s long-term water sustainability.

Utilizing cutting-edge treatment technologies, they enable industrial reuse of tertiary-treated wastewater, reducing freshwater demand and strengthening Bengaluru’s water security. The project’s green initiative includes anaerobic digestion of sludge to generate biogas, which powers plant operations, lowers external energy use, improves efficiency, and supports broader sustainability goals, said a statement.

Just prior to the Bengaluru order, VA Tech Wabag said it was awarded a 300 MLD mega seawater desalination at Yanbu, Saudi Arabia valued at about $272 million (Rs 2332 crore) by the Saudi Water Authority (SWA).

The Project encompasses the scope of design, engineering, supply, construction, and commissioning of a 300 MLD mega desalination plant, to be developed on
a greenfield site located along the west coast of Saudi Arabia.

“We are immensely proud to have emerged successful in this prestigious project not just once, but twice. This repeat success underscores the strength of our technical competence, competitiveness and our deep-rooted capabilities in executing large and complex desalination projects. This prestigious project, aligns with and contributes to the ambitious goals of Saudi Vision 2030 and reinforces Wabag’s global leadership in the desalination sector”, said Wabag’s Head of Strategy and Business Growth for GCC Rohan Mittal.
