India suspends Indus Water Treaty with Pakistan

India has suspended the Indus Water Treaty (IWT) with Pakistan in the wake of the terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir.
The decision to suspend the Indus Water Treaty was one of the five major decisions taken during a Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) meeting led by Prime
Minister Narendra Modi on April 23, 2025, a day after the terror attack claimed 26 lives, mostly tourists.
Signed in September 1960, the IWT is one of the long standing bilateral and cross-border water sharing pacts anywhere in the world. Its suspension by India is expected to hit Pakistan hard as the latter depends largely on the Indus River system and its tributaries comprising the Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, Beas, and Sutlej rivers, for its water requirements for potable and agriculture purposes.
