Welspun Enterprises Limited (WEL), the infrastructure arm of the Welspun group, has said it has secured a major contract to design, build and operate a 910 million litre per day (MLD) water treatment plant at Panjrapur in Maharashtra. The Rs 3145-crore order will be completed in partnership with French water technology behemoth Veolia.

The water treatment project is expected to significantly enhance Mumbai’s water supply system. WEL said it will deploy advanced treatment processes and sustainable solutions to deliver high-quality water while optimizing resource efficiency through its partnership with Veolia.

“The project valued at Rs 3,145 crore includes comprehensive civil, mechanical, electrical and instrumentation works, along with the construction of a treated water sump and pumping station,” the company said in an official statement.

The total contract value includes an operation and maintenance component of Rs 1156 crore and excludes a provisional sum of Rs 29 crore. While the design-build phase is scheduled for completion within 48 months, WEL will also operate and maintain the facility for a period of 15 years.

With the new order, WEL said its consolidated order book stands at Rs 16,330 crore.

“The Panjrapur WTP project marks yet another significant step in Welspun Enterprises’ journey towards becoming a leading player in the water sector. After completion of this project and the 2000 MLD Bhandup WTP, we will be treating nearly 70 per cent of Mumbai’s freshwater requirement, a milestone that resonates deeply with Welspun World’s vision of ‘Har Ghar se Har Dil Tak Welspun’. We are also making strong progress on the 418 MLD Dharavi wastewater treatment facility, which, along with our other water and tunnelling projects in Mumbai, will enhance water reuse, promote circularity and embody our guiding principles of Green, Growth and Governance”, said Welspun World Chairman BK Goenka.

Over the past few years, WEL has been expanding its presence in India’s water sector and is currently executing large-scale, technologically advanced infrastructure projects, including the 418 MLD wastewater treatment facility at Dharavi, Mumbai; the 2000 MLD water treatment plant at Bhandup, Mumbai; a rural water supply project under the Jal Jeevan Mission in Uttar Pradesh and a tertiary treated water conveyance tunnel project in Mumbai, among others.

“With Mumbai’s rising demand for water driven by rapid urbanisation, the Panjrapur WTP will play a crucial role in strengthening the city’s water supply system. The water sector remains a key strategic focus for us and this order synergises well with our overall growth strategy. Our steadfast focus on innovation and sustainability will enable us to deliver a world-class facility that not only meets Mumbai’s growing water needs but also achieves this with the lowest footprint, conserving land which remains a scarce resource in the city”, said Welspun Enterprises Limited Managing Director Sandeep Garg.
