Swedish–Swiss technology multinational ABB has signed a partnership agreement with Danish water environment specialist DHI Group to jointly develop next generation of smart water solutions. The new suite of digital solutions that aim to optimize water use and availability would be officially unveiled in 2022.

The new suite of solutions would be drive more mindful use of water and enable faster and more accurate decision-making for water and wastewater utilities. These solutions will empower customers in this segment to better control water availability and improve plant operational efficiency from both a process and energy optimization perspective, the companies said in an official statement.

“Through this collaboration, we want to facilitate a more mindful use of water, a resource we have taken for granted for far too long. Using just the right amount of water when it’s needed and ensuring it is safe and clean when it re-enters the cycle is essential to ensuring a sustainable approach to water usage,” said ABB Energy Industries Head of Power & Water businesses Danilo Moresco.

“As solutions providers, we have a responsibility to put our technology at the service of more sustainable businesses, and the partnership with DHI in the water space signals a big step in that direction,” added Moresco.

Through real-time collection and analysis of data from the plant, as well as through digital twin models and applications for optimization, ABB and DHI are laying the foundations for an integrated ecosystem of digital solutions which will allow for advanced control and more sustainable operations of water and wastewater facilities, said the statement.

The agreement was recently signed in Genoa, Italy, where both companies hold strong water-related competence centers.

“DHI is deeply committed to finding new innovative ways to use and live with water to ensure a sustainable supply for our planet. ABB’s unique expertise is a perfect match with DHI’s domain knowledge and digital know-how. I am very proud that together we will develop new solutions to save and protect water and bring significant benefits to the management of water distribution and wastewater treatment,” said DHI CEO Mette Vestergaard.
