India membrane bioreactor market seen posting strong growth on recycling, reuse regulations

The niche but important membrane bioreactor market in India is expected to exhibit strong growth in the next five years on the back of stringent environmental regulations for recycling and reusing wastewater in the country.

With rising population and good economic growth, demand for clean drinking water is growing, necessitating the need to resort to water reuse and recycling. Also, shifting focus towards installation of centralized sewage treatment plants (STPs) and effluent treatment plants (ETPs) coupled with increasing urbanization are expected to positively influence the membrane bioreactor market in coming years.

Industry officials see the domestic membrane bioreactor market growing from $79 million in 2019 to be over $100 million by 2025, with leading players like VA Tech Wabag, Ion Exchange India, SUEZ India Pvt Ltd, Thermax, UEM India, Toray International and Hindustan Dorr-Oliver Ltd vying for growth of their respective shares in the overall market.

Also, most of the sewerage pipelines in India have not undergone modernization and advancements in terms of wastewater treatment technology, leading to unsatisfactory treated wastewater quality. There is need to upgrade the wastewater treatment system across the country, which is anticipated to fuel the adoption of membrane bioreactor technology, said a research report.

Based on membrane type, hollow fiber membrane accounted for the largest share in 2019 and is expected to maintain its dominance over the coming years as it offers certain benefits over other types of membranes used in MBRs, such as high effluent quality and high volumetric load.

The municipal segment held the majority share in 2019 in the domestic MBR market. With several projects planned by state governments, technologically advanced treatment systems to meet stringent discharge standards as well as enable more reuse and recycling of wastewater is seen boosting the market, said officials.
