Singapore-based Meinhardt Group and SKion Water of Germany have announced a partnership to build net zero water infrastructure and harness carbon from water in several markets, including India.

The two companies recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to establish the aim and scope of their long-term collaborative partnership.

While SKion Water will provide water expertise, process engineering and technologies, Meinhardt will provide engineering, market support and advice on project structuring and management.

In addition, Meinhardt will provide advisory and consultation services in cost and benchmarking, sustainability, master planning, engineering design, construction programming, and project delivery. SKion Water and Meinhardt will work with customers to create water and carbon capture infrastructure, specifically in developing countries.

The water sector contributes up to 10 per cent of global carbon emissions from its energy consumption, as well as other greenhouse gases such as nitrous oxide and methane from wastewater systems.

“We are excited about working with SKion Water to develop the utilities infrastructure that will enable cities to decarbonize and transform. It will be a big step towards building a resilient and circular economy”, said Meinhardt Group CEO Omar Shahzad.

In an independent PTI news story, Shahzad was quoted as saying that SKion and Meinhardt are exploring opportunities in markets to be able to capture carbon from water and to translate it to various other uses including calcium carbonate (CaCO3), a crucial component of the cement industry. India is one of the leading markets for Meinhardt, which has been undertaking engineering projects for more than two decades in the country, a market where challenges are turned into opportunities, he said.

SKion Water GmbH CEO Dr Reinhard Hübner said the company is committed to ambitious sustainability targets and is piloting and acquiring innovative water technologies and solutions to help accelerate the net zero water and carbon transition. “SKion Water and Meinhardt are both committed to providing net zero outcomes for clients and will collaborate to decarbonize the utilities sector”.
